Character of the Great Gatsby:
Jay Gatsby- He is the Booster and the title character of the whole novel. Gatsby is a marvelous wealthy young man who lives in a Gothic Mansion in the West Egg. He is popular because of the squander parties he throws every Saturday night, but one know about his actual source of earning money and making fortune.
Gatsby was born in James Gats on a farm in North Dakota where he used to work for a millionaire who made him to dedicate his full life only to the Achievement of Wealth.
When he met Daisy; nick's cousin while training to be an officer in Louisville, he fell in love with her. Nick also learns that Gatsby made his fortune through criminal activity, as he was willing to do anything to gain the social position he thought necessary to win Daisy.
Nick views Gatsby as a deeply flawed man, dishonest and vulgar, whose extraordinary optimism and power to transform his dreams into reality make him "great" nonetheless.
What Makes Gatsby Great?
The characteristic which make Gatsby Great is his outward personality, as being a romantic, loyal, the way he is perceived, his potential and idealization of reality. He is considered to be the perfect by his fellows because of his affable and friendly relations as shown by his lavish parties but his inner soul was not satisfied with the life he was spending.
This greatness is only limited to an extent. In the novel, the greatness (and limitations of that greatness) of Gatsby is developed through how Fitzgerald comments on the American Dream, using the character of Gatsby to develop his core themes. However, Gatsby's greatness is only limited due to the goals he strives for; shallow wealth and luxury, and the idealized love of Daisy.
