The painting that I have chosen for my assignment is called “Girl with a Pearl Earring”. It is one of the most famous paintings of Johannes Vermeer, a Dutch painter. Vermeer created this painting in the year 1665. He used oil and canvas as a medium for this painting. The size of this painting is 44.5 cm x 39 cm (17.5 in. x 15 in.). At times, this painting had also been referred as “The Mona Lisa of the North”. Presently, the painting can be viewed at Mauritshuis museum in The Hague, the Netherlands. The depiction of the painting is mentioned below.

I chose this painting because I could relate to the innocence on the face of the girl and the perfect choice of colors that Vermeer had used. Another interesting and appealing feature of this painting is the depiction of light that is illuminating the girl’s face. The light is also highlighting the pearl earring and showing its prominence. Vermeer made the lighting effect possible by using oil paints.
The headgear worn by the girl depicts the dressing culture of that era. It seems that wearing a turban was a trendy fashion during that period. By using blue and gold combination for the turban (heaadgear), Vermeer has further added grandeur to the painting. The light falling on the turban reveals folds of the turban.
Vermeer has shown the girl wearing a jacket which makes us understand that the painting was made in the winter season. The background has been painted black. The probable reason for this might be that Vermeer wanted to focus not only on the girl herself, but also more on the pearl earring. He has totally succeeded in his attempt.
